Background
A young mother living in Wokingham was experiencing significant social isolation. She had limited English, little confidence accessing local services, and no established support network. This left her feeling disconnected and unsure how to engage with services available to her and her baby.
Intervention
The mum was matched with a volunteer who spoke her first language. This immediately helped to build trust, reduce language barriers, and ease communication. The volunteer provided one‑to‑one support and accompanied her to a local baby group.
Progress and Outcomes
At the baby group, the mum met another mother who spoke the same language. This shared connection helped her feel more comfortable and included. The two mums began meeting regularly outside of the group, forming a supportive friendship.
Through ongoing encouragement and support, the mum was gradually introduced to members of her wider community in Wokingham. As her confidence grew, she began attending children’s centres independently and exploring other local baby and toddler groups.
Impact
- Reduced social isolation
- Increased confidence using English and accessing services
- Development of peer friendships and support networks
- Improved engagement with local children’s centres and community groups
Conclusion
With the right language matched support and gentle encouragement, the mum was able to overcome isolation, build meaningful relationships, and become an active member of her local community. This intervention highlights the positive impact of volunteer support in helping families access services and feel a sense of belonging.
Impact – In the words of our families
“She has been great. Her support with the children has been amazing - everything has calmed down and there is no shouting anymore. The relationship between my children has also improved as she has been playing board games and card games with them together. We will be sad to see her go....the next family that get Helen as their volunteer are very lucky”!
“She has helped me to take care of my baby. She has shown me how to do tummy time and for my baby to start using her skills. She has also let me catch up on chores and take a rest! It's been really helpful”.
“I just wanted to say thank you for everything. The regular, weekly contact has been really helpful - it's been really nice having her; she's so friendly and nice, and talking to another adult has been great. I saw jobs I needed to do and planned to do them with her - this has kick started me to continue, so I feel much more on top of things”
